Smart species living on Earth

When asked about the 10 smartest animals on earth, many things had cropped on my mind. How do we gauge the intelligence of an animal to be able to come up with the right choices? What would be the criteria and how are they selected? The task is not easy; however, there are various web sources which provide as a list of the 10 smartest animals living on Earth. I searched and I was able to come up with three independent web sites which listed the animals of their choice. Surprisingly, these web sites have chosen almost the same animals as the smartest specie on Earth. In order to come up with the correct choices, they conducted research and perform series of tests to base their conclusions. The reasons why these animals are considered as smart animals is herein discussed:
The Chimp, Dolphins and Elephants

The first three animals in the list are the Chimpanzee, Dolphins and Elephants. Chimpanzee is in the number one spot. Indeed, this is the smartest; it has the ability to learn by the use symbols. They also understand certain aspects of human language like numbers and numerical sequence as well as some relational syntax. It has been tested that chimps have better memory and are capable of hunting for food, and capable of solving problems. The second on the spot is Dolphins. They are considered very sociable animals. They lived in pods with several others and communicate using a variety of whistles, clicks and other vocalizations. Interestingly, they can sleep with only one brain hemisphere in slow-wave sleep at a time, which means they have the ability to keep half of their brain awake and the other half asleep to protect themselves against predators and other threats. And the third on the spot is the Elephants. This large mammal is really amazing. They are known to be loyal and loving creatures. In Asian culture, elephants are regarded as the symbol of wisdom. It has been proven that they have good memory and possess intelligence; they seem to remember almost everything. They can remember migratory paths and know where to find food and follow landmarks. They have emotions too… they cry, work, play, laugh and use tools from their environment.

Other smart animals

The next choices go to Rhesus Monkey, African Grey Parrot, Rats, Crows and Raven, Ants, Whales and Dogs. We all know that dogs are man’s best friend. Dogs have the ability to think, learn and solve problems. They can learn tricks and learn commands very easily. Dogs can communicate with each other and other animals in many ways through sounds (barkings) and use of body language.
